SAEMA embarks on special debt collection exercise

Takoradi, Oct. 12, GNA - The Shama-Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly on Tuesday launched a revenue mopping exercise at the Takoradi central market during which its officials went round to collect various sums of money from traders and others who have defaulted in the payment of the Assembly's fees, rents and tolls at the Takoradi Central Market.

Mr Philip Kwesi Nkrumah, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, led the team from the Assembly that included Mr Clement Dandori, the Metropolitan Coordinating Director, as well as revenue and estate officials.

Some stores whose owners owed the assembly in rent and fees for between 12 to 24 months were closed, while some of the traders settled their bills on the spot.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Nkrumah said the assembly had set aside five weeks during which it hopes to collect all outstanding fees and rents from defaulters.

He said the exercise was to sensitize traders and the general public to pay their rents and fees to the Assembly, at least by the first quarter of the year.

Mr Nkrumah said the Assembly had collected about six billion cedis, out of its projected revenue of 16 billion cedis for the year, adding that the exercise was to make up for the target before the year ends. KK 12 Oct. 06
