Rural dwellers cautioned against unconventional eye treatments

Jukwa Frame (C/R), Oct 20, GNA - A staff of the St. Francis de Xavier Hospital at Assin Foso has appealed to people, especially those living in the rural areas, to desist from using unconventional methods of eye treatments such as the use of breast milk and grounded cowries and sea-shells.

Mr Vincent Dege said this when he joined a team of eye specialists from Vision Aid Overseas, an NGO based in Britain, to provide eye care delivery for more than 3,000 people in the Twifo-Heman-Lower Denkyira District.

The eight-member team led by Mr. John Giles, an optometrist, provided treatment for ailments like cataract, glaucoma and onchocerciasis and gave out 2,000 spectacles to people at Morkwaa, Praso and Frame.

Mr Dege cautioned against self-medication as well as the use of herbal drugs because this creates complications. Ms Dora Owusu, Praso area development manager of World Vision, Ghana, thanked the group for its humanitarian gesture.
