Rotary Club offers free eye care

Accra, May 27, GNA - Rotary Clubs of Accra Ring Road Central (District 9100) and Rotary International Ahmdnagar-Midtown, India, (District 3132) in partnership with the La General Hospital is offering free eye to the public. The project dubbed: 93Medicare Project (Eye Camp)" is from May 24 to June 17, and is expected to screen more than 4,000 patients. It will perform surgeries for about 500 patients out of the targeted number.

A Medical team from India and their Ghanaian counterparts at the Hospital would screen patients and perform surgeries especially for patients suffering from cataract and glaucoma free of charge.

Mr Samuel Amponsah, Past Rotarian President said the project, was part of the social responsibility of the clubs towards communities they operate and part of the commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of the Rotary Club of Accra Ring Road Central District 9100. He said Rotary's motto: 93Service Above Self," exemplified the humanitarian spirit of more than 1.2 million members. He said every year each club organised programmes revolving around education, health, water and sanitation to assist the people in their operational areas.

Mr Amposah said this was their second Medicare Project with the Hospital. The first was organised in 2006 and he expressed gratitude to the Management of the Hospital for their co-operation. Dr Shirish Rayate, District Governor, Rotary International, India District 3132, said they were very glad to partner their counterparts in Ghana to organise the programme and pledged their commitment towards future projects. Dr Patrick Frimpong, Medical Superintendent and Director-General of the Hospital, thanked the Rotary Club Ghana and India for the co-operation. He expressed the hope that the outreach would bring more joy in the hearts of the patients. "We are looking forward for more of such collaborations in the years to come," he said.

Nana Okyewa Asiedu-Addo, Past Rotarian President, stressed the need to make follow-ups on the project to ensure its sustainability. She urged the public to take advantage of the free service to attend to their eye problems. Rotary Club of Accra Ring Road Central (District 9100) later presented a plague to Rotary International Ahmdnagar-Midtown, India (District 3132) for their support.
