Two traders are in critical condition after a fence wall collapsed at the Suame Roundabout in Kumasi. The incident occurred when a bulldozer, while reversing within the Ghana Water Company's compound, accidentally struck the wall behind which the two traders, among others, were operating. The victims, identified as a kontomire seller and an onion seller, were struck by the falling debris.
According to eyewitness Georgina Abukari, the traders were in proximity to the wall when the accident occurred. "We were trading here when a bulldozer inside the Waterworks building, attempting to exit, unfortunately hit the gate and then struck the fence wall. The victims, who were facing the wall with their backs, were unfortunately hit by the falling structure, resulting in their current conditions."
Abukari noted that the kontomire seller, believed to be in her late 50s, sustained more severe injuries and is in critical condition, as compared to the onion seller, who is in her 30s.
Both women were immediately transported to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
The area, part of the construction site for the Suame Interchange being undertaken by the Rango company, has been a source of concern due to traders occupying it as a trading centre.
Despite previous warnings about the site's dangerous conditions, the Suame MCE, Frank Owusu Ansah, recently ordered their evacuation. It remains unclear how the traders returned to the restricted and hazardous zone. Following the incident, the Ghana Water Company has erected barricades to prevent further unforeseen incidents.
