Residents of Atukpai clear up their community

The Chief and people of Atukpai community in the Odododiodoo constituency, with support from Vivo Energy Ghana and other governmental agencies, have undertaken a massive clean-up exercise to clear their community and drains to prevent the perennial flooding of their area during raining seasons.

The clean-up exercise dubbed ‘Clean a Space, Save a Life!’ reinforces Vivo Energy Ghana’s commitment to environmental sustainability and was held to commemorate World Environment Day and National Sanitation Day.

This year’s event saw staff of Vivo Energy Ghana, the National Commission for Civic Education, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Environment 360 and residents of Atukpai community sweep and unclog the gutters, while personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service flushed out waste from the drainage system.

Following the clean-up exercise, health professionals screened over 100 community members for various health-related diseases, testing blood pressure, random blood sugar and body mass index. In addition, Vivo Energy donated waste bins, wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes, wellington boots, pickaxes, brooms, nose masks and gloves to help ensure cleanliness in the community.



In a speech read on his behalf, the Managing Director of Vivo Energy Ghana, Mr. Ebenezer Faulkner reassured the community of Vivo Energy Ghana’s commitment to environmental sustainability, urging them to be an agent of change and active supporter of the environment.

“In commemoration of World Environment Day and in line with the government’s vision of making Accra the cleanest city on the continent, Vivo Energy Ghana is happy to partner with the Chief and people of Atukpai to undertake this clean-up and health screening exercise aimed at contributing to the development of this community. It is important for us to know that maintaining a clean environment is vital to ensuring full productivity, health, safety, sustainability and overall success in all aspect of our lives”, he said.

The Honourable Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo constituency, Nii Lantey Vanderpuije who was represented by his constituency party Chairman, Mr. Paul Laryea commended Vivo Energy Ghana for their consistency in ensuring that the community in which they operate is always clean.

“I must thank Vivo Energy Ghana for continuously mobilising resources to embark on this yearly exercise. Now, we the community members must ensure that we maintain this clean environment. You must be watchful and ensure that you report any person who dumps solid waste into the gutters to the appropriate authorities” he stressed.

The Chief of Atukpai, Nii Tetteh Tsuru II expressed his appreciation to the management and staff of Vivo Energy Ghana for their positive influence in the community which has significantly contributed to the growth and development of Atukpai.
