Rescind decision not to register - communities urged

Breman Kokoado (C/R), Mar 7, GNA - Communities that have decided not to take part in the Voters Registration exercise because they have not benefited from development projects have been urged to rescind their decision.

Miss Georgina Yeboah, Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), addressing a rally at Breman Kokoado near Ajumako in the Central Region, described the decision as "unpatriotic and defeatist," saying, it was not in the interest of the people.

She pointed out that development was an on-going process, which could not reach every part of the country at the same time. The days when all projects had to be initiated and implemented by the government are gone, she said, adding that, in this era communities have to initiate their own projects before seeking assistance from the government.

"Therefore to accuse the government for neglecting some communities or particular areas and for that matter they would not register or vote is untenable".

Miss Yeboah urged political parties to advise their members against electoral fraud such as double registration and the registration of minors and foreigners.

She called on Ghanaians especially leaders of political parties and staff of the Electoral Commission to ensure the compilation of a credible Voters Register.

"Let us all spare the government from using the nation's scarce resources for compiling voters register every now and then," the District Director pleaded with Ghanaians.

Similar rallies on the forthcoming Voters Registration exercise have been held at Enyan Maim, Akropong, Entrumbil, Ochiso Baa and Hasowodze.
