Joseph Armstrong Gold-Alorgbey, Dean of the Defence Press Corps, has urged media practitioners to uphold responsibility and professionalism when reporting on national security issues, particularly matters concerning the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
Speaking at the 2025 Defence Press Corps Annual Fun Games and End-of-Year Get-Together at the 5th Infantry Battalion Sports Complex, Burma Camp on Saturday, he cautioned that persistent negative reportage about the military could diminish public confidence and pose national security risks.
Gold-Alorgbey said although journalists had the constitutional mandate to report freely, they must remain conscious of the sensitive and critical role the military played in safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity.
He questioned media narratives that portrayed the Armed Forces as weak or vulnerable, warning that such stories could embolden hostile elements intent on destabilising the nation.
“The very day the Ghana Armed Forces loses its name, respect and credibility due to negativity in the media, Ghana will be a nation without a backbone,” he said.
Gold-Alorgbey stressed the importance of protecting the image and dignity of the military, noting that the institution remained a vital pillar of national stability.
He also encouraged journalists to help uphold the honour and respect associated with the military profession.
Commodore Roger Bagoniah, the Deputy Chief Staff Officer for Policy and Plans at the Naval Headquarters, commended the DPC for organising the event, describing it as an important platform for strengthening cooperation between the media and the military.
He assured journalists of continued collaboration from the Ghana Navy and the Armed Forces to promote transparency, unity and cordial civil-military relations.
Commodore Bagoniah, who delivered a message on behalf of the Chief of Naval Staff, urged the media to adopt constructive and solution-driven approaches to security reportage to reduce tension and support national development efforts.
“The media remains a key stakeholder in building a peaceful and progressive Ghana. Let us work together to strengthen national cohesion,” he said.
He congratulated the Corps for the successful organisation of the event and called for the sustenance of such engagements.
