At least over 300 people have been rendered homeless at Salaga in the East Gonja Municipality of the Northern Region after a severe rainstorm hit the district on Wednesday, April 4, 2018.

The storm which started around 5 pm lasted for close to two hours.

According to the Municipal National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Coordinator Ibrahim Alhassan, who confirmed the incident to MyNewsGH.com’s Amoako Christopher, this is the second time within a month the people have been hit by a devastating rainstorm.

"A lot of houses have been affected including schools. As we speak so many schools have been totally ripped off ” he lamented.

He added that they are still assessing the extent of damage cause both public and private properties after which they will compile an official report for onward submission to the Regional NADMO office for onward delivery to the National for assistance.

He, however, pegged the number of displaced persons at 300.

Some of the victims who spoke in an interview with MyNewsGH.com said they slept in mosques after the storm because their homes were no longer safe for occupation.

The Municipal chief executive Mohammed Tamimu together with the MP Salifu Adam Braimah went round to assess the situation and to sympathize with the victims.

They assured them of the support of government to ameliorate their plight and provided 20 packs of roofing sheets to be distributed to the victims as they work to get more support from benevolent organizations and individuals.
