Rainstorm causes damage in Nkoranza

Nkoranza(BA), May 20,GNA - A severe rainstorm has hit Nyinase and Jerusalem settler farming communities in Nkoranza South District of Brong Ahafo and destroyed about 30 buildings, properties and 300 residents rendered homeless.

Mr Baffoe Akrapim, Assembly Member who disclosed this to Ghana News Agency at Nkoranza said the buildings affected included the local Junior High School at Nyinase and the students were attending classes under trees.

He appealed to Nkoranza District Assembly and National Disaster Management Organisation to assist the victims. In another development, personal belongings estimated at thousands of Ghana cedis were burnt when fire gutted a compound house at Newtown in Sunyani at the weekend. The fire which lasted for about three hours displaced 30 tenants and they are now staying with relatives and friends. Madam Janet Boatemaa, trader and a victim, told GNA in Sunyani that she lost GHC 500 in the fire.

She said the fire started from one of the rooms in the house around 1700 hours on Saturday after the inmates had returned from the farm. Madam Boatemaa said they tried to put out the fire but its intensity made them abandon the attempt and called for assistance from the Ghana National Fire Service. "When the fire personnel arrived all our belongings were burnt into ashes," she said amid sobbing and appealed to the National Management Disaster Organisation for assistance.
