Queen of Akyem Kotoku appeals for sacked workers

Nana Akua Asantewaa III, Paramount Queen of Akyem Kotoku, has appealed to the Eastern Regional Minister, to probe why, women working at a water project site at Oda have been sacked by the construction firm.

According to the Queen, the women who numbered about 26 and were working as cooks, cleaners and labourers, when they were sacked last week without any apparent reason by the Contracting firm called AIDA.

Nana Asantewaa, who disclose this at an end of year meeting of the Regional House of Chiefs in Koforidua on Wednesday, said the move had attracted series of demonstration by the youth.

She said the youth are demanding the re-instatement of the women as well as compensation for the destruction of their farmlands.

She said the situation calls for urgent intervention from the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and the Regional Security Council to prevent conflict.

Nana Asantewaa alleged that many farmers and families had lost their cocoa farms and other plantations in the course of the project yet had not received any compensation and attempts to get their compensation had proved futile.

The queen therefore appealed to the Regional Minister to as a matter of urgency ensure, that the women are reinstated and all compensations due the landowners are paid to them to ensure peace and order otherwise “the people would continue to demonstrate”.

The Regional Minister, assured the queen that, the RCC would take the matter up immediately to ensure that sanity is restored, adding that no company whether foreign or local could breach the labour laws.
