Quaye Nungua R/C Basic School leads Greater Accra in environmental drive

Quaye Nungua R/C Basic School has been named the overall winner of the 2025 FanMilk School Caravan, with the school receiving a refurbished ICT lab as part of its prize.

The announcement was made during a ceremony held on the school premises in Nungua, attended by students, teachers, education officials, and local government representatives.

The competition, which promotes waste collection, recycling, and environmental awareness among students, saw Quaye Nungua R/C Basic collect 10,989 wrappers, emerging as the top-performing school in Accra.

The initiative included over 1,000 schools across the Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Western regions, reaching more than 507,000 students and collecting over 11.2 million wrappers.

Other top-performing schools also received legacy projects. In Accra, Association Community Model Basic School came second, receiving a KG playground refurbishment after collecting 9,485 wrappers, while Ashma Tsui-Bleoo No. 2 Basic placed third and was awarded an ICT lab for collecting 8,905 wrappers.

In the Ashanti Region, Maakro M/A Basic won an ICT lab for collecting 9,186 wrappers, and in the Western Region, Windo Methodist School received a renovated KG block.

Speaking at the event, Lionel Parent, Managing Director of FanMilk Ghana, highlighted the importance of combining education with environmental responsibility, noting that the program encourages students to adopt sustainable habits from a young age.

Stephen Kwaku Owusu, Technical Advisor for Pre-Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education, said the program demonstrates how school initiatives can contribute to national development.

“These students are learning values that will shape their future contributions to Ghana. Protecting the environment is a responsibility we all must take seriously,” he stated.

Georgina Ahiagba, Headteacher of Quaye Nungua R/C Basic, expressed pride in her students’ efforts.

“This recognition reflects the dedication and teamwork of our students. The new ICT lab will greatly enhance their learning experience,” she said.

Since its launch in 2018, the FanMilk School Caravan has focused on promoting environmental stewardship and healthy snacking habits in schools. The wrappers collected during the program are recycled in partnership with MiniPlast Ghana Limited, supporting a circular approach to plastic waste management.
