Pupils of Dormaa Akwamu Methodist JHS study under poor conditions as project stalls

Correspondence from the Bono Region

Pupils of Methodist Junior High School in Dormaa Akwamu in the Dormaa East District of the Bono Region are studying under trying conditions due to the absence of a proper classroom block.

The absence of a safe and supportive atmosphere where learners can learn and thrive continues to create an unfavourable learning environment that is undermining the school’s ability to deliver quality education.

With pupils of the school learning in a deteriorated and open-sided structure whose roof is rusted and riddled with noticeable gaps offering little protection from wind, dust, or rain, the Headteacher Gabriel Kpante Kosie indicated that the situation is a matter of grave concern since the infrastructural challenge is not only disrupting academic activities, but also putting the well-being of both pupils and teachers at risk.

“We are doing our best as teachers, but without proper infrastructure, our efforts are limited. The children deserve better, and when there are inadequate facilities, both pupils and teachers are forced to work under conditions that hinder effective teaching and learning, which affects the most motivated learners to concentrate under such conditions,” he said.

A pupil of the school, Oppong kyeremeh, bemoaned that the condition of the classrooms has significantly diminished their motivation to learn, ultimately affecting their overall academic performance and desire to participate actively in learning activities.

Appeal for the completion of the abandoned classroom block

Gabriel Kpante Kosie stressed that the only meaningful way to address the worsening situation is for immediate action to be taken to complete an abandoned classroom block, which is near completion.

Also, he appealed for its completion because it is crucial to improving instruction delivery, boosting student motivation, and ensuring better learning outcomes for the entire community.

“The completion of the stalled project is crucial for teaching and learning, so I am appealing to the government and relevant authorities to get the contractor back on site in the interest of the students who are the future leaders,” he added.
