Police warn against ‘fake’ officers on patrol

The Eastern Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has cautioned the public to be wary of persons parading as police officers and already defrauding their victims of thousands of Cedis.

These fake officers use vehicles that resemble those of the police and offer to help victims after intentionally ramming into them. The fake officers then provide an account for mobile money to be transferred to them.

“They usually target women or men drivers they deem to be soft target,” a statement by the Command said.

“Anybody who get involved in an accident with a police vehicle or patrol team should not panic or transfer any money to a given address as such addresses are very difficult to trace,” the statement signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Yaw Nketia-Yeboah on Friday, January 16 said.

These fake officers have already succeeded in defrauding two persons of a total GH¢8,300, the Eastern Regional Command indicated.

The police have asked all to ignore such calls but to call the official police numbers - 18555 or 191 - for help.
