Police urged to check unlicensed motorbikes

Mr Edward Akuamoah-Boateng, Assemblyman for Ahensan has appealed to the police to check the use of unlicensed motorbikes in the Kumasi Metropolis.

He observed that even though motorbikes like vehicles, were expected to be duly licensed before plying the roads, this was not the case with a majority of motorbikes in the metropolis.

Mr Akuamoah-Boateng made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi on Friday, on the traffic situation in Kumasi.

He noted that even though the law enforcing agencies were most often aware, they seemed not to care much about the movement of cyclists.

The Assemblyman mentioned the Alabar area in Kumasi where unlicensed motorbikes were not only ridden carelessly, but also that pavements were turned into "showrooms" where motorbikes and bicycles were on display for sale.

This practice, he noted served as a nuisance to pedestrians and also impede smooth vehicular movement.

Mr Akuamoah-Boateng attributed the unwillingness and inability of cyclists to secure licenses for their motorbikes to ignorance and suggested to the police to mount an education campaign to enlighten them about procedures, regarding the possession and use of motorbikes.
