Police calls for public partnership to fight crime

The Upper West Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr. Kwasi Mensah Duku has appealed to people in the communities to partner the police to fight crime.

He said nations that had succeeded in the fight against crime had been as a result of partnership with the police.

He said the police could not fight crime alone and pleaded with the people to volunteer information for the safety of the citizenry.

DCOP Duku was addressing police personnel at its annual West African Security Services Association (WASSA) celebration in Wa to appraise performance of last year, identify failures or lapses and to strategies to improve security delivery in the region.

The Regional Police Commander expressed worries about the emergence of chieftaincy and land disputes in the Region, but commended the Regional Security Council, the Regional House of Chiefs and Traditional Councils for the able manner they handled such disputes.

On discipline, DCOP Duku gave the assurance that the Regional Police Command would not compromise any wrongdoing or any act of indiscipline or misconduct on the part of any personnel irrespective of the rank.

He appealed to all personnel to strictly adhere to the tenets of the police professional policing at all levels.

DCOP Duku applauded government for its commitment in providing both human and material resources to the police institution.

Dr. Mohammed Mushiebu Alfa, Deputy Upper West Regional Minister, expressed the gratitude of the people to the police command for helping to sustain peace in the Region.

He however raised public concerns about the police regarding motor bicycles theft, which he said was still on the high side and needed concerted efforts to help reduce the menace.

He was not also happy about the rampant armed robbery carried out on travellers along the Kojokperi – Wellembelle road and on the Kojokperi- Funsi road.

Dr. Alfa announced that the Regional Security Council would meet with all security agencies operating in the Region and strategise to fight activities of criminals in the communities.
