The timely intervention by the police yesterday averted a planned demonstration by the students of the Kumasi Polytechnic, who are calling for the head of executives of the Students Representative Council .(SRC) for alleged misappropriation of funds.

The students blocked the main entrance to the campus, thus preventing management of the school having access for academic work, in protest against the leadership of the SRC.

The students, who ended activities marking SRC week celebration at the weekend, expressed worry over the poor nature of the organization on the part of the SRC leadership and said the usual one week long celebration of the SRC week lasted for only two days this academic year, without any refreshment, even though each student was levied GHc50 to enable them engage some artistes to entertain them.

The SRC President was also accused of having misappropriated GHc10,000 belonging to the union, as well as having failed to fulfil campaign promises of ensuring that power supply on campus was regular. The students wanted the school authorities to postpone the mid semester examinations, which is supposed to start this week, until the SRC leadership rendered accounts of its stewardship.

The Rector, Prof N.N. Nsowaah Nuamah, said but for the distress call to the police, a nasty situation would have happened.

He stated that upon the arrival of management and authorities, nerves were calmed and instructed the students to put their grievances on paper for the school authorities to work out an amicable solution.

Prof Nsowah Nuamah entreated the students to always channel their grievances through the Dean of students who represents the management and assured that the authorities would do whatever it could to resolve the issue amicably.

Meanwhile, the SRC president has not responded to calls by the paper to react to the charge of misappropriation of funds.
