Physically challenged urged to register

Nkoranza (B/A), Feb. 7, GNA - Mr Effah Guakro, President of Nkoranza district branch of the Society of the Physically Challenged has urged members who have attained the age of 18 years to register their names when the voters' register is opened so they could exercise their franchise in the impending general election. Mr Guakro was addressing more than 100 members of the society at its first annual general meeting at Nkoranza.

He expressed concern about the lukewarm attitude of some members during such national exercise, stressing that since they were citizens it was prudent for them to get involved in the governance of the country by voting for the government of their choice.

Mr Guakro underscored the need for members to attend meetings to contribute to discussions to help enhance the development of the communities.

He commended the government for allocating two percent of the district common fund towards the rehabilitation of the disabled and appealed to the District Assemblies to ensure the prompt release of such funds to enable members to engage in income generating ventures. Mr Guakro expressed gratitude to Nkoranza District Assembly for providing GH¢3,000 in support of their activities last year and appealed to it to release their part of the common fund to enable them to expand their businesses. He said members had a craft production centre where they engaged in vocations including shoe making, dress making, tie and dye printing and radio mechanics. Mr Guakro called on the Assembly and the Land Commission to provide members with a permanent document on the land they were occupying. He advised parents whose children were mentally or physically disabled to enrol them in special schools to undergo the necessary training to become self reliant. 17 Feb. 08
