People with disabilities should contest elections - NCCE

Mr Issah Naasagri Abdulai, Brong-Ahafo Regional Director of National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has called on the public to allow women and people with disabilities to contest political positions in the country.

He said women and people living with disabilities are capable at administering good governance and should therefore not be hindered in the political process.

Mr Abdulai made the call at a durbar organised by NCCE and sponsored by the European Union (EU) towards the up-coming District Level Elections at Chirehin in the Kintampo South District.

He said, since tolerance is key to the growth of democracy it is prudent for the people to recognise those with disabilities in nation building.

He indicated that decentralisation and participatory governance ensures development and urged the various communities in the area to demand social accountability from their leaders for the needed development.

Mr Isaac Osei Agyeman, District Director of NCCE underscored the need for stakeholders to encourage women to participate in politics.

He said women continue to contribute significantly in both domestic and political dispensations adding: “If given the nod they could be able to champion the course of development in the country as a whole.”

Nana Osei Owusu, Chief of Chirehin who presided over the function commended the efforts of NCCE and EU for organising the durbar to sensitise the people on the decentralisation policy for good governance.

As part of the programme, there was a focus group discussion towards future district level elections involving school children in the first-cycle institutions on the need for political tolerance during and after the elections.
