Members of Pax Romana, the International Movement of Catholic Students of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), School of Public Health-Hohoe and the Hohoe Midwifery Training School chapter have donated assorted items to inmates of the Kpando Local Prisons. The items include; cartons of soap, bags of maize, detergents and toilet rolls.

Ms Ivy Wemegah, President of Pax Romana, Midwifery Training School chapter who presented the items on behalf of members of the chapters, said the gesture was part of the Movement's charity activities for the semester.

Mr Cyril Torsu, President of Pax Romana, UHAS chapter also said as Catholic youth, they were entreated to give alms as a key principle of the Lenten season and that they were also visiting the sick at the hospitals.

Chief Superintendent of Prison Ernest Amenyedzi, Officer in charge of the Kpando Local Prisons who received the items on behalf of the inmates expressed gratitude to the Movement.

He said there were 256 inmates including; 30, who were on remand, resulting in congestion with 20 inmates in a room. Mr Amenyedzi said due to the congestion, a special place had been reserved to quarantine and treat inmates with communicable diseases.

He said monthly health screening is done by the Prisons clinic to ensure inmates were in good health with those needing medical attention referred to health facilities. Mr Amenyedzi said the Prison's tailoring shop was training inmates to equip them with employable skills and called for support from the public.
