The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has reaffirmed Parliament's commitment to transparency, accountability and open governance, describing the media as an indispensable partner in Ghana’s democratic development.
Speaking at the Parliament Media Soiree and Recognition Night 2025, the speaker acknowledged the Parliamentary Press Corps as a vital link between Parliament and the public.
He commended the journalist for their dedication to accurate, responsible and ethical reporting, despite challenges such as misinformation and the demands of an increasingly, digital media environment.
He emphasised that a free, professional and independent media remains central to informed citizenship, public confidence and effective democratic oversight.
The event celebrated outstanding contributions across various media platform, highlighting the importance of storytelling in simplifying complex legislative process for public understanding.
Awards were presented to Ernest Kofi Adu of Daily Guide for (Best Print Journalist), Kwaku Asante of Joy News for (Best Radio and TV Journalist), Emmanuel Akorli of Peace FM for (Best Radio and TV Journalist-Twi), Elsie Appiah Osei of Ghana Agency News for (Best Online Journalist), Frank Bruce of Odikurok for (Best Social Media Journalist), Paul Egbenya of Citi FM/Channel One for (Best Television Camera Person) and Racheal Quartey of GTV for (Public Service Broadcasting).Each award recognized excellence, integrity and innovation in parliamentary reporting, reinforcing the media role as a watchdog and a channel for diverse citizen voices.
The Dean of the Parliamentary Press Corps, Simon Agianab, received commendation for exemplary leadership, alongside long-serving members Ahmed Osumanu Halid and Awudu Mahama, who were honored for over 25 years of dedicated service.
Special citations were conferred by the Parliamentary Press Corps on individual whose leadership and long service have significantly strengthened parliamentary journalism.
The Speaker was honored for his unwavering support for press freedom, while the clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Djjietror was recognized for fostering a collaborative and enabling environment for the press corps.
The event concluded with a renewed call for deeper collaboration between parliament and the media, enhanced engagement to improve access to information and a heartfelt appreciation for the parliamentary Press Corps enduring contribution to Ghana’s democratic governance.
