Parents urged to spend resources on children's education

Cape Coast, Feb. 3, GNA- An Educationist has urged parents to desist from spending lavishly on funerals and other social activities and rather channel such resources into the education of their children.

Ms Veronica Fry-Annan, Cape Coast Municipal Director of Education, who expressed this sentiment on Thursday, said children could only become responsible citizens in future if they are accorded better care.

Ms Fry-Annan was addressing a day's workshop on: "Quality Education in the Cape Coast Municipality", organised by "Civic Response", a non- governmental organisation in Cape Coast and sponsored by the Department for International Development of the United Kingdom.

Ms Fry-Annan advised parents to ensure that their children used their time profitably after school instead of engaging in unprofitable social activities.

Mr Solomon Asiedu, Municipal Coordinating Director, said in a speech read on his behalf that quality education could only be attained when all stakeholders contribute their quota effectively.

Mr Issifu Lampo, National Coordinator of the Social Accountability Project, a subsidiary of the Institute for Policy Alternatives, said the aim of the workshop was to involve local communities in the assessment of public officials.

"The whole idea is to engender public and social accountability with the view to ensuring poverty reduction efforts."
