Parents must protect children from hazardous work

Seniagya (Ash), Sept 28, GNA – Mr Samuel Owusu-Ansah, Asante-Mampong Municipal Cocoa Extension Coordinator, has asked parents to provide adequate protection for children to ensure that they are not engaged in hazardous work.

They must rather invest their resources to safeguard their proper development, health, safety and education.

He was speaking at a rally held at Seniagya in the Sekyere East District to draw attention to the dangers of child labour.

It was organized by the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) as part of the drive to rein in worst forms of child labour in cocoa growing communities.

Mr Owusu-Ansah said the young ones are the nation’s future and it is, therefore, important that they are nurtured into responsible adults.

This demands creating the opportunities for them to pursue academic careers.

The Cocoa Extension Coordinator said the rights of children must be respected and not abused.

Mr William Kwakye, Cocoa Quality Control Officer in-charge of Jamasi and Agona, said child trafficking has become one of the major problems undermining the development of children.

He, therefore, invited all to join in efforts at tackling the problem.

Mr John Attram, the District Social Welfare Officer, reminded parents that they were enjoined by the law to give children shelter, education and clothing.

He appealed to members of the Community Child Protection Committee to see to it that school children attend school but be prevented from night outs and video shows.
