More than 30 illegal wooden structures along the Korle gonno beach stretching from the Oceanic Beach Resort to Chorkor in the Ablekuma South sub metro in Accra have been earmarked for demolition by Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

The structures believed to be brothels used for prostitution were alleged to be rented out to criminals who attack, terrorize and rape unsuspecting visitors and residents along the old Winneba road at night.

Officials of the AMA have marked the structures with “Remove Now” signs.

The AMA explained the decision to demolish the structures followed a petition from the Chief of Korle Gonno, Nii Tackie Owuowuo III, to the Korle District Police Station and copied to the Assembly.

The petition also touched on illegal sand-winning and block manufacturing activities along the same stretch, mostly in the afternoon and at night, which is causing erosion at the beach front.

Public Relations Officer of the AMA said there is insecurity for residents, tourists, operators of beach resorts and holiday makers, hence the move to embark on the demolishing exercise.
