One killed, 53 houses damaged in rainstorm

Bussie, March 3 (AMADU) GNA- One person was killed and 53 houses were damaged following a severe rainstorm at Bussie, a community of about three-thousand inhabitants in the Nadowli District on Wednesday. A large number of people were injured in the rainstorm, while it rendered about 600 people homeless.

This was made known at Bussie on Thursday, by Mr Timothy Dombo, Upper West Regional Co-ordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) when the Regional Minister, Mr Ambrose Dery visited Bussie to console the victims and to assure them of assistance from non-governmental organisations and other agencies.

The dead only identified as a Burkinabe Fulani said to have taken shelter in one of the affected houses during the rainstorm as a falling mud wall crushed him.

He has since been buried, while a 34-year old teacher of the local primary school, Mr Alex Baah, from the Jaman District in the Brong Ahafo Region whose house also collapsed on him was rushed to the Duong Bone Setting Centre.

Mr Dery later visited Mr Baah at Duong where he was being treated for fracture on his thigh and presented him with one million cedis. The NADMO Regional Co-ordinator told newsmen that the victims were made of 172 men, 193 women and 230 children some of whom were putting up with relations and friends.

The regent of Bussie, Mr Naayiruu Naazie, on behalf of the victims expressed the gratitude of his people to the Minister for his demonstration of concern for the people with his prompt visit and words of hope.

Mrs. Pauline Ninkpeng, Acting Nadowli District Chief Executive accompanied the Minister.
