The Okyehene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has officially declared Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed as the legitimate Chief of Akyem Kyebi Zongo.

This pronouncement brings finality to the long-standing question regarding who rightfully succeeds the Kyebi Zongo Chief stool to lead the Muslim community.

Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed succeeds the late Kyebi Zongo Chief, Sariki Abubakari Umar, who passed away earlier this year.

At the Traditional Council meeting held on Monday December 8, 2025, the Okyehene confirmed Alhaji Sanusi based on his strong background, admirable qualities, qualifications, leadership experience and positive influence in society.

According to the Okyehene, Alhaji Sanusi stands out as the candidate who will best champion the interests of both Akyem Abuakwa and the Kyebi Zongo community.

Out of the six individuals who contested, Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed distinguished himself above all others.

The Okyehene further clarified that he has no personal issues with the main contender, who is the son of the late Kyebi Zongo Chief.

However, he explained that the young man cannot ascend the stool at this time when there is an older, more qualified candidate available.

He added that there may be an opportunity for him in the future but for now, Alhaji Sanusi is the most suitable to lead.

The Okyehene instructed the kingmakers to proceed with all necessary rites to formally install Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed as the new Kyebi Zongo Chief.

Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed currently teaches Physics at Abuakwa State College (ABUSCO) and served as the second-in-command to the late Zongo Chief.

He is also the NDC Chairman for the Abuakwa South Constituency.

Upon his installation, he will serve as President of the Akyem Abuakwa Council of Zongo Chiefs and become a member of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council.

Following the declaration, Faud Mohammed, an opinion leader of Kyebi Zongo, together with other elders present, commended the Okyehene for his decision and choice.

They affirmed that Alhaji Sanusi is highly qualified, responsible and well-positioned to promote peace, unity and development in Kyebi Zongo, especially given his academic background.

They further expressed confidence in his ability to instill discipline and provide effective leadership for the community.

In his remarks, Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed expressed gratitude to the Okyehene for the endorsement and confidence reposed in him.

He pledged to uphold peace, harmony, and development in the Zongo community, bringing honour to Okyeman.

He also assured that he will remain calm, resolute, and cooperative throughout the traditional rites and processes ahead.
