Offending drivers fined in Brong Ahafo

Sunyani June 21, GNA - A total of 129,035,000 cedis in fines was imposed by courts on drivers who violated road regulations between January and June this year in Brong Ahafo.

Statistics released to Ghana News Agency by Police Inspector Christopher Tawiah, Public Relations Officer indicated that the Police Motor and Transport Unit (MTU) arrested a total of 279 drivers for roads regulation violation.

Wenchi MTU recorded the highest of 181 arrests, Sunyani 109 and Berekum seven cases and all the affected drivers were arraigned before court.

The offences committed included unregistered motor bikes, causing road obstruction, use of motor bike without crash helmet, failing to produce driving licence, failing to renew road worthiness certificate, neglect of traffic signs and over speeding.

Use of motor vehicle with shattered windscreen, failing to pay income tax, failing to produce insurance certificate, use of bicycle without light and brake bell, use of private car for commercial purposes and open boot were other offences.

Inspector Tawiah advised motorists to obey road regulations and to respect police signals to stop for checks.

He noted that as much as the police recognized the importance of vehicles on roads as a means of transport, drivers must also ensure they did the right thing as they performed their duties.

The police are not enemies to motorists and they are only on the street to save lives and to avoid unnecessary accidents, he said.
