A model school complex constructed by the Golden Star Wassa Limited, a mining firm, was on Thursday commissioned at Ningo in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality.

Some 44 trainees who have completed courses in masonry, carpentry and mobile phone repairers under the Skills Development Programme of the company were presented with start-up tools and certificates at the ceremony.

In an address, Mr. Daniel Owiredu, Vice President of the Golden Star Wassa Limited, said the school complex and the training programme cost 310,000 United States dollars.

He said Ningo, Subriso, Benso, Mahamo, Yayaho and surrounding hamlets would benefit from the school and the training programme.

Mr. Owiredu said the Golden Star Development Fund is funding three major projects at a cost of 280,000 dollars.

The projects are the construction of Benso Community Centre Complex, Subriso mini-community centre and Awunakrom school toilet facility and borehole, he said.

Mr.Owiredu said the company is supporting 93 students in second cycle schools with an annual budget of 43,000 dollars.

Dr. Tony Aubynn, Chief Executive Officer, Ghana Chamber of Mines, used the occasion to appeal to government to allocate 30 per cent of royalties to mining communities.

He said the chamber was encouraging more Ghanaian companies to take advantage of the local content of the mining sector.

Later, she distributed school uniform and exercise books to pupils of the model school.
