Newmont Ahafo Mine wins safety competition

The Newmont Ghana Ahafo Mine has emerged the winner of the Zone One 2014 Mine Safety and First Aid competition.

A statement signed by Mr Kwame Agbeko Azumah, Communications Manager of Newmont Ahafo Mine, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, on Tuesday, said the competition was organized annually by the Ghana Chamber of Mines in collaboration with the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission.

It is aimed at bringing together mining companies and their host communities in creating awareness in safety and first aid.

The statement said this year’s competition was held at Awaso, under the theme: “If it’s not safe, don’t do it”.

The other participants the Ghana Bauxite Company and Kinross Chirano Gold Mines Limited.

According to the statement, Newmont’s victory demonstrated its adherence to high safety standards in its operations.

Newmont Ahafo and Ghana Bauxite Company Limited, which emerged first in the community category, would represent the Zone One in the National Competition in November this year.

“In 2013, Newmont Ahafo Mine was adjudged the most improved mine in safety performance in the country, an honour bestowed on the company by the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission,” it said.

The statement said Newmont had been certified by the International Safety Body, OSHAS, which is a signatory to the International Cyanide Management Code.
