The Member of Parliament for Offinso South, Isaac Yaw Opoku, has blasted the government’s recent cocoa price adjustment, calling it “laughable” and a “huge insult” to cocoa farmers.
The government raised the producer price of cocoa beans from GH¢49,600 to GH¢51,660 per tonne for the 2025/2026 cocoa year, equating to GH¢3,228.75 per 64kg bag.
Opoku said the administration has failed to fulfill its promise to pay farmers 70% of the Free-On-Board (FOB) value of $7,200 per tonne.
Speaking to Dr Cash on Kumasi-based OTEC 102.9 FM’s afternoon political show Dwabrem on Monday, the MP expressed disappointment in the NDC-led administration, accusing them of having “lied their way to power.”
His criticism mirrors that of the Cocoa Farmers Cooperative Union, which also rejected the new price, describing it as a betrayal of farmers’ expectations.
The union had anticipated at least GH¢3,800 per 64kg bag, making the announced figure fall short of their projection.
Opoku has urged cocoa farmers to demand what is due and to ensure they receive fair remuneration for their produce.
The development has raised concerns about the government’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of cocoa farmers.
