The Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Simon Akibange Aworigo, has secured the renovation of the abandoned Upper East Regional ICT Centre in Navrongo to expand access to information and communications technology training for young people in the region.

Speaking to the media on October 26, 2026, Aworigo said he initiated efforts to revive the facility following concerns from constituents about its abandonment.

The ICT centre, which was initiated by the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), had remained abandoned for several years following the change of government in 2016.

Aworigo paid tribute to the late former Member of Parliament, Mark Woyongo, whose efforts, he said, brought the project to Navrongo.

He explained that he made several visits to GIFEC and engaged the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, to secure the necessary support for the renovation.

The MP expressed satisfaction with the progress of work, describing the facility as a major investment in the region's digital future.

He said the centre would serve the entire Upper East Region by providing more young people with opportunities to acquire ICT skills and explore employment opportunities in the technology sector.

Aworigo noted that ICT education could play a significant role in addressing youth unemployment, particularly at a time when digital skills were becoming increasingly important in the job market.

He also linked the project to the government's commitment to technology education, citing the introduction of the One Million Coders Programme as part of efforts to equip young people with relevant digital skills.

The MP expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama, the Communications Minister, Samuel Nartey George, GIFEC Chief Executive Officer, Tanko Kumpita, and the regional GIFEC manager, Martin Abeba, for their support towards the renovation.

He particularly commended Abeba for keeping him informed about the progress of work on the facility.

Aworigo expressed optimism that the completion of the centre would sgthen ICT training in the Upper East Region and create opportunities for more young people to develop skills for the digital economy.
