Nadowli-Kaleo DCE urges Ghanaians to venture into farming

Katherine T. Lankono, the DCE for Nadowli-Kaleo has appealed to all Ghanaians to take advantage of the government’s flagship programme, Planting for Food and Jobs which is aimed at addressing the declining growth of the agricultural sector in the country.

She urged citizens to take up farming as a full or part-time activity in order to increase their income.

According to the DCE, farmers benefited from government’s subsidize fertilizer and some improved variety of seeds under the Planting for Food and Jobs programme.

“The programme still continues this year though farmers would have to make full payment before they receive their fertilizer unlike in the previous year,” she stressed.

On ‘One village-One Dam’ initiative, the DCE said the policy, expected to engage farmers in all year farming is to make Ghana a net exporter of major cash crops and foodstuff.

She said some sites in Nanvilli, Kulpieni, Kpazie, Serekpere, Bilee, Tangasia, Kuuri, Janguasi and Chaang have been identified for the construction of dugouts and when these are constructed, it will help keep the young generation from migrating.

Katherine T. Lankono made this known when she addressed residents of Nadowli during the Senior Citizens Day Celebration.

She called on all to use this year’s Republic Day Celebration as an occasion to begin the process of consensus building to solve some of the difficulties that confronts the country, and added that day presents an opportunity for several pensioners to dine and wine with one another and top government officials and reflect on the political and Socio-economic strides the country has made since attaining its Republican status in 1960 through turbulent military interventions to its current flourishing democracy.
This day is usually marked with luncheon parties for a cross section of the senior citizens in all the regions. In Nadowli, the DCE uses the luncheon to interact with senior citizens who are invited to the function. Some gifts were presented to the citizens.

The DCE added that, government is also working to expand the Social Protection Policy, LEAP to include more beneficiaries, ’the programme provides cash grants to the extremely poor and vulnerable and the aged persons in Society so that they could meet their basic needs for survival’’.

She advised the fifty (50) Senior Citizens present at the event to use their diversity in politics, religion and tribe to foster the development of the District and the nation as a whole.

Some of the Senior Citizens who expressed their excitement, said the day was not just for only merrymaking but also day to reunite.

They thanked the DCE for marking the day with them at the district capital and prayed for her to achieve greater things in her political life.
