NVTI receives new set of mathematics textbooks

Accra, Dec. 17, GNA - A new set of mathematics textbooks, which makes the study of the subject very simple, has been designed for the National Vocational Training Institutions (NVTI). The textbooks include; Contemporary Mathematics for the Middle Grades (Conceptual Approach volumes one and two), Contemporary Mathematics for the Middle Grades, (Activity Book volumes one and two) and Meagasa Mathematics Model.)

The textbooks, which can also be used by non-vocational students, is to help the users to thoroughly know the mathematical concepts and apply them in their everyday life rather than study the subject to pass their exams. Launching the textbooks in Accra on Thursday, Professor Sitsofe Anku, Author of the books said mathematics was not only a difficult subject as perceived by many, adding that the study of the subject could be fun if people study it well.

Professor Anku who is also the Founder and Executive Director of the Meagasa Mathematics Academy said what made most people to feel frustrated dealing with mathematics was that in real life situations, people do not show the relevance of the subject. He quoted statistics indicating that 135,000 candidates for last year's Basic Education Certificate Examinations failed in the subject. He said the low level of interest in the subject was not encouraging, adding that the subject was needed for efficient developmental planning.

Mr Stephen Amponsah, Director of the NVTI said the books would give a new direction to the teaching of the subject and thereby enhance appreciation for mathematics.
