More than 250 National Service in the Asutifi District of the Brong Ahafo Region are up in arms against their District Director, one Mr. Emmanuel Asare for levying each personnel an amount of GHC 15 for utilities before they submit their monthly duty report.

According to some service who to spoke to Atinkaonline, Mr. Asare told them the District owes the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) a chunk of money thus the need for service personnel to help the district defray the cost.

Sources at the district say, the Director has posted names of service personnel who have defaulted in payment on the main notice board of the Assembly and has threatened not to sign their monthly report if they who refuse to honour his demand.

The footnote under the list which is stamped and signed by the District Director read, “The above listed personnel are to settle their score with the NSS District Office before submitting their monthly duty report form.”

An affected NSS personnel who pleaded anonymity said Mr. Asare’s attitude can best be described as greed since he is hell bent on extorting money from individuals who have travelled far from their family to serve their nation on a meager salary.

The District Director, Mr. Asare told Atinkaonline the personnel agreed to support the District but denied imposing the levy on them. However, he failed to explain the purpose of the list he signed and posted on the notice board and the footnote.

Executive Directive of National Service Secretariat, Dr. Kpessa Whyte told Atinkaonline Thursday that the behaviour of the Asutifi District Director is untoward and has no right whatsoever to impose levies on the personnel. He assured that he would expedite action and call Mr. Asare to book.
