Gushegu, (N/R), Aug. 7, GNA - The Alliance for Change in Education, (ACE) an NGO involved in education has trained 240 School Management Committee (SMC) members in the Gushegu and Karaga districts. The SMCs received training in school management and their roles and responsibilities.

Thirteen District Teacher Support Teams (DTST) from the two districts had also been trained alongside tutors from the Bagabaga, Tamale and Bimbilla Training Colleges on participatory methods of teaching.

Mr Abdalla Abubakar, the ACE facilitator for Gushegu announced these on Thursday, when Mr John Hobenu, the Northern Regional Director of Education paid a visit to the area to inspect some wing schools under the auspices of the ACE project in the Gushegu and Karaga districts. The ACE facilitator said 1,500 dual desks, 100 teachers' tables and chairs and 100 chalk boxes had been supplied to the wing schools in the districts.

Mr Abubakar said under the programme, 40 untrained teachers had been supported and enrolled into the Untrained Teachers Diploma in Basic Education (UTDBE) for a four year course.

He said the number of untrained teachers for the course in the UTDBE would be increased to 100 in the next academic year. Mr Alhassan Ziblim Alhassan, the District Coordinating Director (DCD) announced that a GHC450 three classroom block funded by the European Union would soon be constructed for the Gummonayili community in the Gushegu district.

He commended the NGOs for filling the gap in the provision of educational infrastructure in the district. Mr Hobenu urged the staff of the district education to be dedicated to their work and ensure that they were in the forefront of the new education reform to ensure its success. He also told them to intensify their teaching in the classroom to enable their students perform credibly in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to uplift the image of the region.
