NGO draws programme to educate girls

Navrongo (U.E/R) Sept. 26, GNA - A one day workshop, aimed at sensitizing parents on the need to educate their girl child and create a platform for women to take active part in national policy making, has been held at Navrongo in the Upper East Region. The workshop was organized by FAWE Ghana Chapter, an International NGO with support from UNICEF.

The workshop was also used to recruit resource persons to draw a radio advocacy programme to sensitize the people of the area on the need to educate their girl child.

The programme, currently operating in 12 districts in the three Northern Regions, is a five year programme, aimed at promoting education through the production of advocacy radio programmes. The resource persons, who are Heads of Departments and religious groups, would seek the welfare of women and educate them on sexual abuse, violence, drug abuse, forced marriages and sexual harassment. They would also educate the general public on how such vices could affect the girl child and could deny them of formal education. The Participants discussed the role of the district assemblies and traditional leaders in the education of the girl child, and urged them to play active roles by formulating policies which will create a platform for girls to be educated on those issues.

The General Manager of FAWE Ghana Chapter, Mr Picconius Ofoe Siameh urged the participants to take the programme serious since it would bring quality development and gender equity to the people of the area. 26 Sept. 09
