Bono Regional NADMO Director Fati Kine Lam has cautioned boat operators against overloading passengers, warning that the practice puts lives at risk on the Bui Dam reservoir.
She urged fishing communities to resist the practice and ensure that operators adhere to their boats’ weight limits.
Lam gave the warning during the presentation of more than 100 reflective life jackets to the Banda-Bongase fishing community in the Banda District. The community relies on the upstream section of the Bui Dam reservoir for transportation and fishing.
She stressed that operators must not exceed the approved passenger capacity or maximum weight limits of their boats in order to prevent accidents.
“Always be mindful of weather signs and return to shore immediately when conditions become unfavourable,” she advised.
Lam also warned against speeding, noting that boats can become entangled in tree stumps in the reservoir and capsize.
She said the government has prioritised safety in fishing communities and remains committed to addressing their challenges.
Lam advised both operators and passengers to wear life jackets at all times when travelling on the reservoir, stressing that strict adherence to safety protocols offers the best protection.
Earlier, she educated fisherfolk, fishmongers, traders, residents, traditional leaders, and boat operators in Banda-Bongase on basic water safety protocols.
