NADMO trains 60 fire volunteers in Mfantseman

Yamoransa (C/R), Oct. 22, GNA - The Mfantseman District Secretariat of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has trained 60 volunteers in the Abeadze Dominase and Yamoransa zones to assist in mitigating disasters.

Speaking at the passing out ceremony of 30 volunteers at Yamoransa, Mr J.K. Kuntoh, Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the organization said NADMO was now concentrating on disaster prevention rather than the distribution of relief items to disaster victims. Mr Kuntoh said the volunteers, known as "Rapid Response Personnel" were being trained to move swiftly to mitigate disasters when they occur.

Mr. S.O. Adabo, Mfantseman District Fire Officer advised parents to teach their children and maids how to use gas cookers. They should be cautioned not to open the valve before going to look for matches, he cautioned.

Mr Adabo cautioned against keeping gas cylinders in a living room saying as much as possible people should create compartments outside the kitchen for the gas cylinders.

Mr Adabo urged estate developers to ensure that more than one outlet was created in a house to provide alternative access in the event of a disaster.

Miss Christine Antor, District HIV/AIDS coordinator cautioned Ghanaians not to take the pandemic for granted, since it posed a threat to the survival of mankind.

Mr Ignatius Gyesi, an Environmental Health Officer speaking on food poisoning advised cooked food sellers especially chop-bar keepers to provide more napkins for use by their customers since keeping one napkins for use by all customers posed health hazards.

Alhaji Abu-Saddiq Abban, the District NADMO Coordinator said the passing out ceremony formed part of activities planned for the celebration of the World Disaster Reduction Day in the district.

He cautioned against exploiting disaster situations to cheat victims adding we must desist from stealing victims' properly under the pretext of salvaging them.
