The Ashanti Regional National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has ordered the Waste Management unit at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to shut down the refuse Transfer Site at both Nana Akwasi Agyemang/Serwaa Nyarko SHS area and that of Yenyaaso.

The Ashanti Regional NADMO Coordinator Kwabena Nsenkyire speaking to Abusua FM’s Osei Kwadwo said the caretaker of the site at Nana Akwasi Agyeman/Serwaa Nyarko SHS has for sometimes been spreading the refuse resulting in some entering the nearby stream, narrowing its course and further obstructing the free flow of the water body.

He added that at the Yenyaaso site, the caretaker always sets the refuse on fire mostly at night and the large volume of smoke produced puts health of the residents at risk.

According to him, the activities of the two caretakers have become major challenge affecting the residents in both communities.

“We are urging KMA to provide houses with refuse bins for door to door collection. NADMO is giving Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly one month ultimatum to close down the two sites and further implement our recommendations” he said.
