NADMO embarks on fire prevention

Koforidua, March 29, GNA - The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), has embarked on a fire prevention education campaign in schools and workplaces in the New Juaben Municipality. The campaign is to educate the public on fire prevention, safety and other practices, to reduce the level of casualties in times of disaster. Mr Yaw Adu-Gyamfi, Municipal Coordinator of NADMO, who spoke to GNA said, as part of the programme school children would be expected to embark on tree planting to serve as wind breaks. He said in collaboration with the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) , the public, especially school children, would be trained on how to use fire extinguishers, fire safety, and other methods in fighting fire. Mr Adu Gyamfi said it had become necessary following five major outbreaks of fire disasters in the municipality, which claimed two lives including a father and his son.

He said NADMO is focusing its attention on disaster prevention through public education. The coordinator noted that with the start of the rainy season many buildings had had their roofs ripped off causing damage to lives and properties, adding that, tree planting exercise would be intensified to save the situation.

He called on the public to observe good practices, especially in the homes to prevent the devastating effects of fire outbreaks, mentioning the domestic use of candles and gas as areas that must be handled with utmost care.
