Mothers Appeal for a School for their Children

Sumbrungu (UER) Dec. 14, GNA - The Red Cross Mothers Club of Asonge near Sumbrungu in the Upper East Region has put up a temporary mud structure to house 116 children who were enrolled in school this year. The women, who undertake income-generating activities like basket weaving and shea butter extraction, appealed to the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly to help their community build a durable stronger school block.

The mothers, during a visit by an Inspectorate team from the Municipal Education Office, said they had to establish the temporary structure to encourage their children to go to school regularly as the long distance to the school in the next village was deterring the young pupils from attending classes.

Mr. Victor Abagre, Assistant Director of Education advised the community to properly acquire the land for the site of the school to avoid litigations from landowners. He said the number of pupils currently enrolled in the school was encouraging and urged the people to do well to keep them in school. Mr. Azumah Abariche, Regional Secretary of the Red Cross commended the women for taking the initiative and urged them to sacrifice a bit for their children's education by using the money they make from their activities to support them.
