Ministry provides equipment for Sanitation exercise

The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has provided 10,000 plastic waste bins, wheel-barrows and gloves for distribution to individual households throughout the 11 districts in the Upper West Region.

The items are to be used for this month’s National Sanitation Day exercise, which comes off in the Region on, Saturday, July 4.

Mr. Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, a Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, presented the equipment to Alhaji Amidu Sulemana, the Upper West Regional Minister, at a short ceremony, at Wa.

He appealed to the Regional Coordinating Council to distribute the equipment equitably to the districts to ensure that the challenges of waste management and the processing of waste were addressed properly in the communities.

He, however, warned households not to use the plastic bins as containers to store water but to strictly use them for waste management purposes.

Alhaji Sulemana thanked the Local Government Ministry for providing the equipment, saying, it had always been a challenge for many households to manage their waste because of the lack of waste bins.

He charged the environmental units of the various district assemblies to educate community members on the proper use of the waste bins.

“Let the people know that the bins are plastic containers and they should avoid the practice of storing any waste materials containing fire in them,” he cautioned.
