Minister tours flood prone areas in Tarkwa Municipality

Tarkwa, July 9, GNA - Mr. Joseph Nii Afotey-Agbo, Minister of State at office of the President, has visited Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality to assess the extent of destruction to properties due to flooding, following heavy rains that hit the area recently. He was accompanied by members of the Presidential Committee on Floods, Mrs. Christina Kobinah, the Municipal Chief Executive, and officials of the National Disaster Management Organization. The flood prone areas visited, included Cyanide Junction, Kaarekwano, Slaughter House, Methodist Primary School, Pentecost Church, Nkaponease, and the Tarkwa Secondary School.

Mr. Afotey-Agbo said that the visit, which formed part of tour of Flood prone areas in the country, was to enable the team to observe the nature of destruction so that it could assist in adopting strategies to solve the problem of flooding in the country.

Mr. Joseph Kwadwo Nsiah, Western Regional Director of Ghana Highways Authority, expressed worry that some buildings and structures in the Municipality had been constructed in water-logged areas and water ways. Mrs. Kobinah said that a clean-up, organised in the Municipality to desilt drains, helped to minimise the effects of the flooding and called on the people to avoid the dumping of refuse into gutters.
