The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has dismissed claims circulating online that he has promised to withdraw military and police personnel stationed at the Asanko Mining concession in Tontokrom, Amansie South District.

According to the Minister, no such assurance was given, and security forces will remain at the site to maintain law and order.

His comments are in response to a viral video in which a Tontokrom youth leader alleged that Dr Amoakohene assured them that the security forces would be withdrawn.

The Minister, however, described the claims as misleading and cautioned the public against spreading unverified information that could worsen the already fragile situation.

“There is no directive to withdraw the military or police. We need them to maintain peace and protect lives and property while we work on resolving the issue,” he said. He further urged the youth to remain calm as the Regional Coordinating Council engages all stakeholders involved," he said.

Tensions in Tontokrom have intensified in recent days following confrontations between some members of the community and military personnel at the mining site.

The situation has since led to several confrontations, raising fears of potential violence.

Dr Amoakohene has appealed to the youth to cease fire and allow for peaceful dialogue to take place.

He further disclosed that a meeting between the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council and officials of Asanko Mines will be scheduled to gather all perspectives and find a long-term solution to the dispute.

Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the need for due diligence and transparency in resolving the matter.

He noted that the Coordinating Council will also consult the Minerals Commission to ascertain whether Asanko Mines possesses a valid license or mining title to operate on the land.

“If it is confirmed that the concession indeed belongs to Asanko Mines, there will be very little the government can do in terms of reclaiming the land for the youth,” the Minister stated. “However, we will appeal to the company to consider supporting the affected youth with alternative employment or livelihood support,” he added.
