Minister advocates cleanest community award

Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, Greater Accra Regional Minister, has called on Ga West Municipal Assembly to institute an award for the ‘cleanest community’ in the area.

He noted that when such a system is put in place it would serve as motivation for the people to get involve in ensuring good sanitation practices.

Nii Afotey-Agbo made the call when he inaugurated the new office block of the Environmental Health Unit at Amasaman.

He suggested that a community that emerges as the cleanest in any particular year should be allowed to select a project of priority in the area of sanitation to improve their lot.

Nii Afotey-Agbo urged the staff of the Environmental Health Unit to ensure that their presence in the communities is felt, but not to sit in their offices while the people die of preventable diseases.

He challenged them to conduct their activities such that next year there would be no reported cases of cholera in the Municipality.

“You need to embark on a massive educational campaign on the need to keep our environment clean at all times and sanction citizens who flout sanitation bye-laws with impunity.

“If you do your work well it will go a long way to improve conditions in our markets, homes and public places,” the Regional Minister said.
