Millennium Village project organise workshop for vegetable farmers

Manso-Keniago (Ash), Oct 24, GNA - The Millennium Village Project (MVP) has organised a two-day workshop for 800 vegetable growers within the Amansie West district at Manso-Keniago.

It was aimed at updating their skills and encourage them to apply new farming methods.

The farmers were taken through the use of improved seeds in vegetable farming, nursery practices and assessment of vegetable growers.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr E.K. Asiedu, Science Co-ordinator of the Millennium Village Project, said under the project, more than 6,000 farmers would be trained in the various techniques in agriculture, especially the use of farming tools, proper use of agro-chemicals and improved seeds.

He said various committees had been formed by the MVP in all the 48 communities in the areas of health, education, roads and agriculture to help raise the living standards of the people. Mr Asiedu said the Project would rehabilitate all deplorable school buildings, provide teachers' quarters, as well as, supply teaching and learning materials to schools.

Mr Kwasi Offei Bonsu of the Crops Research Institute said some of the problems facing vegetable growers include bad weather, pests and diseases, such as fungal infections and urged the farmers to seek advice from agricultural extension officers to improve their yields. 24 Oct. 06
