Mike Hammah and DCE visit Winneba Water works

Winneba (C/R), Jan 7, GNA - The Minister for Transport and Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency, Mr Mike Hammah, has visited the Winneba Water Works to acquaint himself with activities and operations of the Company.

He was accompanied by the Effutu Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Nii Ephraim, and some officials of the Assembly. The visit followed intermitent water supply to the Municipality in the later part of December last year, as a result of a break-down of the pumping machines.

Conducting the Minister and his entourage round the premises of the Company being run by Aqua Vitens Rand Limited (AVRL), Mr Samuel Laryea, Production Manager in charge of the Winneba Water Works Treatment Station, said insufficient numbers of staff is among the main problems facing the company.

According to Mr Laryea, the pumping machines developed some faults, making it impossible for the company to supply the quantity of water needed by the public.

He said the faults had been rectified and the company is currently supplying 1.7 million gallons daily because it is running at half capacity to avoid pressurizing the system.

Mr Laryea said when the machines are operating at full capacity they could supply about 3 million gallons of water a day. Mr Leryea appealed to the government to support the company address its challenges to enable the company to provide quality service to the public. The Minister expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of the Company and pointed out that its operations needed to be reviewed. Mr Hammah was not happy that the project within a period of about nine years has been left to deteriorate to such a level despite the huge sums of money invested in it by government.

Mr Hammah promised to meet with the Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing to see how best the project could be properly managed to prolong its life span to ensure regular water supply to the people in the area. Mr Samuel Agyeman Mensah, Distribution Manager of the Company, mentioned the lack of transportation and constant power interruptions as other key problems facing the company. 7 Jan. 10
