Mfantseman District exceeds NID target

Saltpond (C/R), Nov. 23, GNA - The Mfantseman District Directorate of Health Service exceeded its target in the National Immunization day (NID) held from 11th to 13 November 2005.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview at Saltpond, Miss Helena Tibiru, a Public Health Nurse, said 58,949 children below six years old, were expected to be immunised against poliomyelitis (Polio) but 60,887 or 103 per cent were immunized. Miss Tibiru who is a Disease Control Officer said NIDS unlike other health programmes, which involved travelling this was well patronised in the district because the service was brought to the people at their doorsteps.

She said 53,054 children from six months to five years were also to be administered with vitamin A supplement but the directorate recorded 60,107 or 113.30 per cent.

The nurse explained that the figures for the two exercises were different because unlike the previous one babies from six months to five years were involved in the vitamin A supplement exercise. Miss Tibiru appealed to mothers to make their children available for the second phase of the programme, which would take place from 9th to 11th December 2005.
