Mfantseman Assembly inaugurates electoral task force

Saltpond (C/R), Aug. 15, GNA - An electoral taskforce to monitor adherence to the rules and regulations guiding the electioneering process in the Mfantseman municipality has been inaugurated at Saltpond. The seven-member taskforce comprised personnel from the security apparatus in the municipality with Saltpond District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Daniel Sackey as its chairman.

Mr Robert Quainoo-Arthur, Municipal Chief Executive, who inaugurated the taskforce, said challenges that had come up during the recent limited voters' registration exercise necessitated its formation. He said the formation of the taskforce was to reduce political tension ahead of general election in December.

Mr Quainoo-Arthur called on the members to liaise with the National Commission for Civic Education and related agencies to step up education on the need for political tolerance.

"Our people should be made to know that elections are for development, and not for destruction," he reiterated. Mr. Quainoo-Arthur charged members of the taskforce to be fair and firm in the discharge of their duties, adding that they should not take sides.

He said the team should ensure that electoral offences reported to them were dealt with promptly in order to win the people's confidence. He said the Municipal Assembly would make available logistics, including funds in support of the taskforce's work.
