Men advised to restrain themselves from killing their wives

Deputy Superintendent of Police Rebecca Nyamah, the Tema Regional Co-ordinator of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit, has appealed to men to stop killing their wives on suspicion of infidelity.

She told the GNA in an interview that the rate at which some men were murdering their wives was alarming.

“The fact that you paid her dowry or you are married to her does not mean that you have bought her and therefore have the right to murder her,” she said.

DSP Nyamah said men who suspect their wives of infidelity and have resolved not to continue with the marriage should seek for divorce as the best alternative and not to kill them.

She called for a holistic approach in handling men who murder their wives and suggested that to prevent recurrences of such murders, psychological investigations into the perpetrators’ background must be carried out alongside the criminal aspect.

Touching on statistics on the crime scene within the Metropolis, DSP Nyamah said during the first quarter of the year, her outfit recorded 388 criminal cases as compared to the 394 cases last year.

Assault topped the list with 221, followed by 42 defilements, with 25 threat of death and 20 each of stealing and threat of harm.**
