Mass teacher transfers hit Achimota Primary School

Tension is mounting at the Achimota Primary School in Accra over the transfer of some forty teachers.

Some affected teachers who spoke to Joy News on condition of anonymity said they received a letter about their transfer during the second week of re-opening.

According to them, the letters were signed by the Metropolitan Director of the Education Service, Mrs. Quaye.

They say the letter only informed them about their transfer but gave no reasons for the action.

The letter according to the teachers also stated that they had two weeks to move to their new stations or their salaries would be withdrawn.

The teachers say the letters were addressed to them with copies each for the head teacher of Achimota Primary School and the head teacher at their new stations.

Some of the affected teachers are said to be housemasters while others have a few weeks and others months to go on retirement.

According to the teachers due to their failure to attend a scheduled meeting last week, they had been asked to meet the disciplinary committee on Tuesday.

They said it was inappropriate for them to leave the school now and also raised concerns about accommodation.

The teachers also claim that a report sent to the Ghana Education Service indicating that the PTA of the school had endorsed the exercise was inaccurate.

They believed that the move was a deliberate attempt to remove some of the teachers from the school.
